Please " keep on keeping on" making movies like this one

Based on a story by the prolific story teller Paul Gallico (Poseidon Adventure, Mrs. 'arris series, Thomasina, and Lili, to name a few), Next To No Time is an entertaining, enchanting, and good natured fantasy / drama about a shy, self-effacing man David Webb (Kenneth More) who has to clinch a high profile deal while on a West bound voyage on an ocean liner before the ship reaches New York. Aboard the vessel with his prospective clients, although he is bright and personable he lacks the self confidence to approach them with his proposal. His only source of support and encouragement is a photograph of his adoring fiancee with the inscription "keep on keeping on" - a testament to her unflinching faith in his ability to accomplish the task and her unwavering encouragement that he can count on. One night, sitting at the bar, David Webb notices that the clocks on the West bound ship are stopped for one hour each night to compensate for passage through the time zones. A steward jokes about how time stands still for an hour each night when nothing that one does during that time really "happens" or "registers". Webb realizes that this "timeless zone" - Next To No Time - may be the perfect time and quite possibly, his only chance, to pitch his proposal - for, if he fails, it wouldn't really be "happening". From then on, Webb is a changed man - at least for one hour every day - when he is most confident and persuasive in approaching his clients with the proposal. In a Cinderella-like way, he must accomplish what he must within the confines of the "enchanted hours" before it is too late. Does his plan work? If it does, is it magic? Or did he have it in him all along? And why don't they make simple movies like this one anymore?

You Taste and Feel the Sand in Your Mouth and Eyes

This taut, engrossing and exciting war drama is more a fascinating character study than just another WWII film. Made in the sweltering heat of the northern Sahara Desert of Libya, I found myself sitting up until 2 am to see it through to the end, enjoying every minute of it, feeling like I was experiencing every task of the events in the story along with the characters.

The story tells of ambulance corps officer played by John Mills named Captain Anson, whom the war has driven to drink, who is unwillingly ordered to leave besieged Tobruk before the Germans break through and take the strategically important town over. In his ambulance he takes with him two young nurses, along with the stalwart Sergeant Major Tom Pugh played by Harry Andrews, and heads out across the desert for Alexandria in Egypt. Their journey leads them through many obstacles, and along the way they pick up the enigmatic South African army officer, Captain van der Poel (van-der-POO-el he corrects them in his distinctly Afrikaner accent) played by Anthony Quayle, who has become detached from his unit and is looking for a lift. Can they beat the elements of the desert and make it to Alexandria, where Anson knows of a certain bar that serves the ice cold lager he so longs for and promises the others?

In height and build Mills is a much smaller next to big men like Andrews and Quayle, but I was very impressed with how his strong acting and personal inner character make him seem as tall and broad shouldered as the other two. I also admired how the whole cast put their all into the many no doubt very difficult scenes, obviously having to deal with the physically exhaustive work that was asked of them, the tortuous heat and sand fleas nipping at their legs. I could see they were feeling the affects and that adds to the realism of the whole film. Note even the lovely Sylvia Syms as the seemingly unshakable nurse Sister Diana Murdoch, didn't avoid having to look hot, sweaty and bothered like her male co-stars, unlike some Hollywood actresses of that time who I will not even mention. That and the ambulance must have been an oven during the whole shoot.! A truly unique film and worth the whole gripping two hours.

The Sign of Zorro

I love this movie! The costumes are excellent, actors are excellent, fencing and shooting are excellent and cast and crew are excellent. But even tough, this movie is good, it's also old. So it has this old fashion in it, but that doesn't matter.

Guy Williams (Don Diego de la Vega and Zorro) is my favorite actor of all time. Henry Calvin (Sgt. Garcia) is also an excellent actor, and he is very funny. Which makes him perfect for his role. Gene Sheldon (Bernardo) is an even better actor, and just as funny! He makes an excellent man servant.

Plot: After 3 years of study in Spain, Don Diego de la Vega returns to California because he father sent a message for him. When he arrives in Los Angeles, he finds that a dictator named Captain Monasatario, has taken over control. He is the most cruel man in all California, and arrests everyone that can not pay the taxes. Diego decides to do something about it, and makes the Zorro outfit. And with his man servant Bernardo and the horse Tornado, he fights for freedom and justice!

Real Family Success

Strange enough, all the previous comments merely described the beginning and left the details over. I feel a necessity to confirm that this is a family work, since Marina Vlady was also Robert Hossein's wife, and the - excellent - jazz music was written by te director's father, André. Under these circumstances, no wonder it was a really good thriller, seen when issued and immediately identified with the music. The suspense was flawless, and maintained throughout until the end. Robert Hossein, at the time one of the best European players, managed to impose himself also as a top screen and stage director. He's still putting up great stage shows, with a preference for religious subjects.harry carasso, Paris, France

In interesting idea for a film, but a bit too obvious.

A momma's boy comes home from medical school with a surprise in tow--a new fiancée! Well, his mother certainly can't have ANYONE taking her little boy away from her, so she spends much of the film trying to bring her son back under her thumb--and to drive the fiancée away from him. When Mother learns that her daughter-in-law to be has a heart condition, she does her best to make sure her new rival has a heart attack. What's next in sick sick, twisted, Oedipal home?

The basic idea of an evil and possessive mother trying to break up her son's upcoming marriage is an interesting one. The problem with "Woman Possessed" is that it's all too obvious. No subtlety is involved at all and only a complete moron wouldn't recognize that his mother was trying to destroy the marriage! And, when his fiancée brings it to his attention, he is adamant in defending his mother. In other words, the man is simply too stupid and the mother's actions should have been handled with more finesse. The mother is pretty bad and in an obvious way. And, for that matter, why would the fiancée stay? She KNOWS her future mother-in-law is bad--and who wants to marry a weenie like the son?! But, if you ignore all these reasonable questions in your mind, you can enjoy the film.

Great idea, somewhat indifferent execution--it's worth seeing and not as bad as the current 3.1 rating would suggest, but it's not an especially inspired film. At least the nice twist at the end made it worth seeing.
