London-based Millionairess Epifania (Sophia Loren) is attracted to Dr. Kabir (MD from Delhi and PhD from Calcutta), who is more intent on treating patients. When she persists, he confides in her that he had made a commitment to his late widowed seamstress mother that he will wed any woman who will manage to survive on just Rs.500/-, for 90 days. She finds out that this sum is equivalent to just 35 shillings but readily accepts this challenge. She also informs him that her late father had also imposed a condition that she must wed a male who will turn £500 into £15000 within the same period. Epifania then finds employment with an Italian firm, ends up re-organizing, and turning up the firm's profits. At the end of 90 days, she goes to meet Kabir and discovers that he has not only given all the money away but also has no interest whatsoever in marrying her.

Review :

Interesting comic character study that spawned a hit song.

Let me just start off by saying that George Bernard Shaw is one of my all-time favorite playwrights, and Peter Sellers is one of my all-time favorite comic actors. So naturally I think this is a pretty good movie. I admit the concept is more interesting than the actual execution. But certainly the personality of the leads does compensate. And it is a very intriguing idea.

I think the best moments are when Sophia Loren's character gets the good doctor to make a house call, the Doctor trying to give his fortune away on the street and no-one bothering to take it (Would that still be the case today?), as well as Alistair Sims excellent lawyer. And having worked in the medical profession (as a lab clerk), the dry comments on the high-tech lab equipment, and ruthless beurocracy of a large medical institution rang especially true. There are certainly some exceptional social commentary behind the human story, which is the trademark of Shaw's work.

But I like this movie especially for being the inspiration of the classic novelty song "Goodness Gracious Me!", which the two leads recorded in order to promote the movie. I actually think the song works better.

The World War II drama that you must see!

We are in Czechoslovakia during the World War II. The situation is very bad. Because of the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the Nazis are killing innocent people for least reasons. A few students from high school are going to be executed for a stupid little joke. Maybe their professor could head off it...

Strong movie made by Jiri Krejcik - the living classic of Czech film is the steady-state value of cinematography. After the end of this movie, you are gonna think about it at least for two weeks. I guarantee!

nice elegiacal western

just caught this thoughtful film on TV again.

not a particular Mitchum fan, but here he is gives a wonderful world weary performance as the "outside man" gradually learning kindness and companionship and friendship against the odds of his upbringing and circumstances and the hand that fate has dealt him.

Not a particular shoot em up type western but a film about belonging and extricating yourself from a bad lot when down a blind alley. Just watch as he reacts to the little kindnesses as he recovers from his injury or the final scene with his beloved horse, lovely low key acting.

Beautiful photography too. Passes a lazy afternoon very nicely.

Review :

Stunning Fellini and Mastroianni

Long, episodic film by Federico Fellini about the conceits and facades of life: fame, intellect, sex, friendship, despair, innocence, etc.

Marcello Mastroianni is perfect as the shallow tabloid reporter who joyfully follows around Rome a blonde movie star from Sweden (Anita Ekberg) as she prowls around the city's bars and bistros. He is also having an affair with a woman (Anouk Aimee) while his girl friend (Yvonne Furnaux) seems to be going nuts.

But as Marcello moves through the city following the movie star, the miracle of the virgin, a few parties, etc. we see that his life is very empty because the things he reports on are meaningless drivel. We see that fame and fortune and the trappings of success are meaningless.

Marcello starts to realize that the movie star is a vapid airhead, the miracles are a sham, and his friend's (who seemed quite happily married) ghastly murder and suicide show the futility of life itself.

The Fellini themes are common to many of his films, but what makes La Dolce Vita so memorable are the cynical tone, the Nina Rota music, and the string of terrific visual images.

The opening scene is of a helicopter hauling a gilded plaster statue through the air across Rome. The flying saint is a bizarre image but serves to set up the movies which is all about images and events that are never what they seem to be.

Notable are the scenes of statuesque Ekberg in that terrific strapless black dress with the voluminous skirts as she swishes around dancing and eventually wading through a city fountain. The party scenes are also notable. The first because of the intolerable intellectuals who sits around and talk and talk but never do anything. The last party has the indelible image of Mastroianni "riding" a drunken blonde woman as though she were a horse. The final image of the giant dead fish is quite unsettling as it symbolizes their bloated lives.

Fellini is brilliant in filling scenes with odd people as extras, usually hideously dressed or wearing ugly glasses. The "gallery" of people who inhabit the city is one of grotesques, vapid fashion slaves, the rich, hangers on, etc.

A long film, but highly recommended and very memorable.

great story beautifully realized

As a teacher and serious student of film, I regard Passage du Rhin among the dozen best films I've ever seen. It is sad that it is no longer available to us. Fortunately in the years it was available on 16mm I was able to show it often to classes and small groups. I became so familiar with the film I could passably re-write the screen play.

Lionel Jeffries steals the show.

I found this film hilarious when I first saw it on general release as a small boy, and if anything I find it even funnier now. This film is listed as an early Peter Sellars vehicle, but his fans should be warned that the great Lionel Jeffries steals every scene he is in, starring as the disciplinarian Chief Prison Officer Sidney Crout, "The most evil twisted screw that ever crept down a prison corridor". Great performances too from David Lodge, Bernard Cribbins, Maurice Denham, Irene Handl and Wilfred Hyde-White make this a real repertory ensemble production. And what a witty script. Definitely one of my top ten favourite films of all time (and I bet it didn't cost more than £100,000 to make).

Edit

How could I omit to mention the ravishing Liz Fraser? Funny and gorgeous!

Dream of a Nightmare

In what was to be his final, incomplete film, Andrzej Munk gives an insight into an "island in time", as the narrator calls it. A woman on an ocean cruiser meets what seems to be a person from her own past - a past where she was overseer in the Auschwitz concentration camp, and the other a prisoner. They were bond together by a strange link, which in the view of guard (Liza) was generally build up by some sort of respect and protection, whereas the actual events that follow Liza reminiscences leave no doubt about her participation in the inhumanity and her guild. From the point of view of Marta, the surviver (or is it someone else?), the "relationship" was different. Munks pictures show us two sides of the story in a dream-like atmosphere: Black and white, eerie music, haunting pictures. Though a totally different content, the aesthetic atmosphere recalls 'La Jetee' by Chris Marker, filmed around the same time. In all, a short but intense viewing experience that achieves great emotional impact. Way ahead of it's time.

The Movie Where Nothing Happens

Some movies just don't need to be made, and that is the case with "Faces In The Dark", a turgid, uneventful movie which lacks tension, suspense and, especially, mystery. Actually, the mystery may be why this picture was produced in the first place. A grouchy, self-absorbed CEO is blinded in a laboratory accident and spends the rest of the film making himself even more unappealing. The picture is well-acted and produced but is too long by half. Well done but not interesting.

May I digress for a moment? I have lately begun to feel that UK viewers consistently overrate films made in the UK. Is it because they feel intimidated by Hollywood? We make a lot of clinkers over here, too. But often when I obtain a UK film recommended by British viewers, it is not as good as advertised. So, with "Faces In The Dark" I got taken again. C'mon folks. A little unflinching honesty goes a long way.

On January 5, 1900, a disheveled looking H.G. Wells - George to his friends - arrives late to his own dinner party. He tells his guests of his travels in his time machine, the work about which his friends knew. They were also unbelieving, and skeptical of any practical use if it did indeed work. George knew that his machine was stationary in geographic position, but he did not account for changes in what happens over time to that location. He also learns that the machine is not impervious and he is not immune to those who do not understand him or the machine's purpose. George tells his friends that he did not find the Utopian society he so wished had developed. He mentions specifically a civilization several thousand years into the future which consists of the subterranean morlocks and the surface dwelling eloi, who on first glance lead a carefree life. Despite all these issues, love can still bloom over the spread of millennia.

Review :

Politically Laundered Sci-fi

In isolation, this film is an interesting and rather enjoyable tale. It is only when you appreciate the underlying theme in the original 1895 novel penned by H.G. Wells that you discovers how the story had been "laundered" to be "politically correct" for American public release. In a land where "socialism" has almost always been a dirty word and at a time when the McCarthy political witch hunts (that hit Hollywood rather badly) were still a fresh memory and when the "Cold War" was at its height, M.G.M. Studios was not going to take the risk of preaching a cautionary story about how the seeds sown by the capitalist system could exact a gruesome nemesis in a distant future. Instead, the studio took the story, stripped it of its ideology and presented it as the adventure of a gifted Victorian inventor.

Throughout his career, Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) placed his sympathies with the working class. In 1905, he joined the Fabian Society, a socialist think-tank whose ranks included George Bernard Shaw and that gave birth to the British Labour Party. It is not surprising that his ideology would embed itself in his writing -- and this was certainly true of his first novel, The Time Machine. The book tells of an enterprising inventor who crafts a device that can carry a human passenger forward or backward through time. The hero travels 800,000 years into the future and finds a world in which humans had evolved into two species: an illiterate and child-like race called the Eloi, devoid of technology but similar in appearance to modern humans who inhabited the surface of the planet; and the more repugnant Morlocks, technologically sophisticated and living in perpetual darkness in underground caverns. The hero gradually learns that it is the Morlocks who supply the Eloi with food, clothing and other basic necessities of life, but they exact a terrible price. At periodic intervals, the Morlocks "harvest" the Eloi for food.

(By his own drive, Wells, who lived an impoverished childhood and became literate only in his teen years, entered university where he studied biology under Thomas H. Huxley, the illustrious and outspoken champion of Charles Darwin. He was aware of the debates among evolutionary biologists of his day over the discovery of Neanderthal remains, about how two "distinct" species of humans -- Neanderthals and our Cro-Magnon ancestors -- existed in a prehistoric Europe and whether it was a peaceful co-existence or whether the two species competed, perhaps violently, for control of resources. Wells merely extrapolated the concept of two competing human species to a distant future.)

The hero in the novel also discovers how this world came into being. At some less remote future time, the industrialists collectively chose to establish their factories and means of production underground, leaving the surface of the earth green. Eventually, the politically powerful classes decided to banish all workers underground as well, leaving the world of sunshine and blue skies as a playground for the wealthy and the privileged -- a paradise that would eventually turn sour when the passage of time would adjust the genetic makeup of the two classes in their different environments and when a successful "slave revolt" would place the descendants of the workers in control.

Clearly, such a political fable could not be put on screen in the United States in 1960. If a cinematic version of the story was going to be made, another explanation had to be conjured up to account for the evolution of the two human species -- and it was found in the Cold War itself, a war that turns "hot" and forces huge populations underground for survival. Toady, however, almost forty years after the movie was released and more than a hundred hears since the novel first broke onto the world, that M.G.M. explanation seems horribly dated and it is the original Wells plot that holds up much better in today's international, political and industrial climate.

Lots of location footage around Paris

I wanted this one as part of my Brigitte Bardot collection, though she only has a very short, uncredited, scene irrelevant to the plot. Along the Right Bank, man A buys a bird in a cage for his wife. He then meets up with a school friend, B, he hasn't seen for years, who has a beautiful wife, C (the young Pascale Petit). After a drink in a café, A drives B and C to a manif militaire in the Champs Élysées which B wants to attend. A then offers to drive C to her home in St Cloud, even though he lives at Nation, but she asks to be taken to another location. A thinks she might be meeting a lover, hangs around, and when she comes out, picks her up and they go off to spend the day together. A tells his wife he is at meetings, C says B never gets home until late after his manifs. After shopping, wining and dining, avoiding a cheap hotel, finding her home a bit fraught, they head off into the country for an al fresco encounter. Since she never takes her tights off, one assumes nothing actually happened (though in those days films left a lot to the imagination). After breakfast by the Gare St Lazare, A returns C home pretending he has been looking after her after an attempted assault. B is shaving himself with a cutthroat, which worries A, but it becomes apparent that this is not the first time C has come home in a compromising position. A drives B to Gare de Lyon where the latter takes the train to Marseilles to get away from C, leaving B in an awkward position vis à vis both his wife, the bird in the cage and the bird at St Cloud. All very French and dubious, but the location settings around Paris were as I remembered them.

An Empty Suit

This has to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Were not Robert Foster so handsome and myself so compulsive I would have pulled the plug early on.

The action and plot unbelievable the script terrible with an idiotic happy moralistic ending of sorts. But saying that much gives it too much credit..this movie comes as close to having zero content as anything I have ever watched. There is nothing to dislike as there is no content to the thing.

An ambitious young gangster Robert Foster breaks off from his gang early in his career to form his own killing enterprise. His weapon of choice= a machine gun in a music box (title). His wife eventually rats on him under pressure from a priest when he decides to take down a special state prosecutor.

But I can't stress how absolutely cardboard like without any suspense this thing is...how flat the dialog and unimaginative the story. It is almost like a handful of untalented actors were told to invent it ad lib as the cameras rolled.

Usually I will dislike a movie for something it does...this one I disliked because it does nothing it has zero content in terms of story and acting. It truly is an empty suit. Also unsurprising it is not a B movie but a Z- movie in terms of budget and props as well. It could have been written in an hour and filmed in an afternoon.

One funny thing...this is a costume movie of the 20s made in 1960..however even this is done on the cheap most of the extra women look straight out of 1960 dresses and make up wise with a small unconvincing twists.

A Toho Thriller.

Probably one of the creepiest and scariest sci-fi from Toho. A former, vengeful soldier uses a matter-transmitting device to transport himself to his enemies so he could do away with them. A reporter and the detectives get mixed into the plot and they aim to stop this "Teleport Madman" before he continues his killing spree.

This is one of the more dull and dark stories from writer Shinichi Sekizawa, who was known for his more light-hearted and positive screenplays. Jun Fukuda, known for his crime dramas, did well directing. Sei Ikeno's music score was eerie and added suspense to this thriller. With some heart-pounding terror, this movie is not short on believable special effects. Featuring veteran Toho actors Akihiko Hirata, Yoshio Tsuchiya, and Yumi Shirakawa, this movie is a good one to scare away the kids.

So it begins, a compact and often violent retelling of the Thuggee Cult in India in the 1820s. It was considered strong stuff back on release and had the head suits at the BBFC shifting uneasily in their office chairs. It's a film that has also fallen unfairly into the realm where political correctness dwells, where some folk are seemingly obsessed with decrying old movies for their outdated political portrayals. This deserves better, for it's a very good script, where although the history is difficult to pin down as being correct, it does at least show a care and attention to detail where the Thugee Cult is concerned.

It's also a good old adventure yarn, full of intrigue, peril and detective work. Fisher directs at a clip, never allowing the plot to stagnate, and the low budget afforded the project is barely evident amongst some very effective sets. Cast are mostly good value for money, with lead players Rolfe perfectly restrained as an officer desperately trying to be heard and Pastell owning the film as the High Priest of Kali; in fact he is revelling in the bad guy role. Bernard provides an ear banging effective musical accompaniment.

Torture, maiming, heroics and a clever mongoose, something for everyone here! 7/10
