Plot twists & turns
You may not want to pay to go see this movie, but if it comes on TV it may be worth your time.
First off, the setting of this movie goes from Europe to Thailand to Cambodia (Angkor Wat). It was really neat to see scenes of Bangkok over 40 years ago.
Lots of secret agents involved as well as some unexpected killing & serious plot twists. I was just thinking "hey, that's exactly what I'd do in that situation". In so many films you see someone kill someone then leave that person's gun behind and you say to yourself that they're a real idiot, that you would have picked up the gun and searched the body, etc. This film has a lot of scenes where feel that the actors are acting intelligently.
This movie was originally in German and the English dubbing isn't bad at all.

Beautifully-told tragedy
Jiri Weiss's 1960 film Romeo, Juliet and Darkness is a wholly convincing, tightly controlled account of the human costs of despotism. The story takes place against the background of the Nazi occupation of Prague, and more specifically the horrible repercussions visited upon the population after the assassination of Heydrich, the leading Nazi in Czechoslovakia. A young man, in his final year at school, takes in and shelters in the attic of his mother's house a Jewish girl of the same age, going to great pains both to conceal her presence and to find food for her. Weiss's direction is superb, with particularly good establishment of the atmosphere of the flats where most of the action occurs. Watching the move now, one almost feels one is present in the Prague of 1942, the movie being particularly effective at showing how routine life goes on under even the most harsh of political circumstances. The two young actors in the lead roles both give excellent and very moving performances. There are also a range of vividly-drawn characters in the background. At least two things make the film noteworthy, looking at it from today's perspective. First, the film is almost wholly free of any propagandistic elements, presumably quite an achievement given the time and place of its production. The film, with its emphasis on a humanistic depiction on the trials of ordinary people, points towards the Czech New Wave films which would appear five or six years later. Second, Weiss's direction is such that the film is simultaneously vivid and yet understated, the relative absence of histrionics making it all the more absorbing. The denouement is very powerful indeed, making the film (available on DVD in the UK) one that is very worthwhile seeking out. I bought the DVD not knowing what to expect; I ended up watching a masterpiece.

The criminal genius Dr. Mabuse (Wolfgang Preiss in his genious acting; afterwards his career was in international war- and anti-war movies as a german General) plays tricky with society and police. Detective Gert Fröbe plays good, some say Preiss plays better, decide for your own. This tentious thriller explores, that by little action big disport can be formed, imagine Lang would have made Face Off (1998) !

Approachable Ozu masterpiece
Ozu's common themes of ageing, filial ties and modernisation are as present here as in many other of his films. But in this film, as well as the melancholy and gentleness we are accustomed to, there are large doses of comedy which makes this film far more accessible for the uninitiated.
The story centres around a widow (Setsuko Hara) and her daughter (Yoko Tsukasa). The daughter doesn't want to get married because she wants to care for her mother, whereas the mother wants her daughter to marry even though she realises she'll be left alone. So far everything is extremely familiar. Except that in this case the dead husband's friends get involved, trying to find suitors for both mother and daughter, thus creating comical situations, causing family tensions, and finally necessitating for the daughter's friend to step in and sort out the mess.
All in all highly recommended for anyone who wishes to try out this highly prestigious director, and a strong reminder for fans of why we love him so much.

"Looks Like Law's Coming Back To Warlock"
Warlock is a little mining town in the Wild West. Local heavies from San Pablo are terrorising the citizens of Warlock, and the movie starts with the sheriff being run out of town. The citizens' committee decides to hire the notorious Clay Blaisdell to reimpose order.
Ethical positions are relative in the strange little world of Warlock. The citizens are willing to give Blaisdell free rein when it comes to cleaning up the town, even though his methods are famously ruthless, and his 'package' includes installing himself and his partner Tom Morgan in the saloon with their travelling casino. Blaisdell intends to earn a rake-off as the faro dealer. He will also collect $400 per month as the 'marshall', even though Warlock has no town charter and does not qualify for a marshall.
Blaisdell is himself a man of deep moral equivocation. Henry Fonda plays him as an emotionless killer who paradoxically forms deep personal attachments - first to Morgan, then later to Jessie Marlow (Dolores Michaels). He crusades to rid western towns of their bad guys, but does so on a strictly commercial basis. Blaisdell knows that the citizens' hero-worship will turn in time to resentment, and he and Morgan will have to move on to the next beleaguered town.
Morgan, too, is a man of profound contradictions. The cynical casino owner has little regard for the human race, but adores Blaisdell, "the only person ... who looked at me and didn't see a cripple." Morgan is Blaisdell's partner in the law-and-order campaign, and yet there is a strong suggestion that Lily is a whore and Morgan her pimp. The relationship between Blaisdell and Morgan has a definite homoerotic tinge, and when Blaisdell takes up with Jessie, Morgan behaves like a jealous lover. Eventually, he even gives up the will to live.
"Warlock" is an idiosyncratic film with its own look, its own terminology and a curious plot. The quaint high street with its rutted red clay is quite unlike standard western towns. When the characters talk of 'road agents', they mean stagecoach hijackers. 'Backshooters' are men who shoot others in the back. In the mean moral climate of Warlock, backshooters are everywhere. McEwan never sets up a confrontation without putting his backshooters in place, and Blaisdell's answer to the San Pablo boys is to cover their backshooters with backshooters of his own.
Richard Widmark plays Johnny Gannon, the San Pablo man who throws his lot in with the people of Warlock. Johnny is the measure of the town's growing maturity. If the people are prepared to back Johnny against the bad men, there will be no need for hired guns such as Blaisdell. The judge warns Johnny that his status as the town's totem will single him out for trouble - "You're a target, a symbol, and they must come after you." And so it transpires.
Changes of clothing signify changes of heart. Once Johnny decides to embrace the law, he doffs his denim jacket and starts wearing fancy duds. When Clay transfers his allegiance from Morgan to Jessie, he discards the silk waistcoats which are Morgan's 'uniform'.
"Star Trek" fans will spot DeForest Kelly ("Bones") in the role of Curly, the sarcastic joker of the San Pablo gang. We quickly form the view that Curly is not as brutal as the others, and this is borne out when the shooting starts in earnest.
The film has two climaxes. First, Johnny has to face down McEwan and his men, and then there has to be a reckoning with Blaisdell. This eccentric film manages to contrive an unexpected ending.
In a strong cast, Fonda and Quinn stand out as the ill-matched friends

Disappointing for Crabbe Fans
I grew up in the 1950's and 1960's watching reruns of Crabbe's "Captain Gallant" T.V. series, and the great "Flash Gordon" and "Buck Rodgers" movie serials. I was expecting to see another movie with Crabbe as an affable and cool action hero.
The only surprise here is how little action there is and how serious Crabbe takes the role. He is still a likable hero, but there is little humor and the dull plot gives him little to work with. A gunman rides into Abilene looking for his estranged brother. He finds that his brother is wanted for a robbery of $64,000 dollars. (Was this a reference to the television show "the $64,000 Question?). As he tries to find out what happened to his brother, the unfriendly townspeople keep telling him to leave and threatening him and assaulting him. He keeps saying that his brother is innocent and he won't back down.
There were probably 20 half-hour Western television series on television in 1959-1960 when this movie was made. This plays like an average episode of a television series stretched out to a little over an hour.
Crabbe was only 52 years old at the time this was filmed and still looks quite handsome. However, a stuntman is obviously doing the few action scenes like falling off a horse, running, and jumping through a window. I'm wondering if 30 years of action movies had taken a toll on his body.
It is sad that this was Crabbe's last film as an action hero. It is hard to understand why he did not get any major staring roles for the last 25 years of his life. This was the opposite of John Wayne who thrived in hit after hit the last 25 years of his life. Crabbe was, in my opinion, a better action-hero actor than Wayne.

Meanwhile, trouble brews between Drakut's gypsies and the local kingdom. Nicholas, Irina's father, rules benevolently but he's often manipulated by the evil and ambitious Grand Duke, Atanas. Atanas conspires to have Drakut's mother, queen of the gypsies, burned as a witch. Drakut mistakenly blames Irina for this, still believing he has never met the princess, only her maid. Atanas also has Nicholas killed, blaming the death on Drakut. Eventually Drakut learns the truth about the Irina-Melena mix-up and rescues the princess from a forced marriage to Atanas. Irina then makes Drakut a prince, making him eligible to marry her.

Action, romance, costumes, mediocrity
Somewhere in between the sword-and-sandals and spaghetti-westerns, the Italian film industry of the 1960s turned out a few costume-adventures which might, very loosely, be termed Renaissancers. They're set in post-medieval Europe and display swordplay, men in tights, buxom barmaids, coaches pulled by teams of horses, masked balls, etc. "Revenge of the Conquered" is a passable but undistinguished example of this minor genre, featuring the underused and now forgotten Burt Nelson, who only takes his shirt off once, and the lovely, always-watchable Wandisa Guida. To date, this is the movie's only review. It doesn't quite deserve such borderline oblivion but then, there's little reason to remember it.

There are no actual decapitations, cattle mutilation, desecration of houses of worship, or spurting arteries in Sex Kittens Go To College. Within those limits, this is ghastly beyond anything you can imagine.
Imagine Mamie van Doren as an ex-stripper with an IQ of 268 and twelve college degrees - no, thirteen, hired as a college professor. Imagine Jackie Coogan as a blustering oilman doing a 45-minute W.C. Fields impression. Imagine Martin Milner out-geeking Eddie Deezen, a twelve-foot robot named Thinko that handicaps horse races, a chimp in golf pants. Imagine the most credible and disciplined performance in the film being turned in by Louis Nye. Imagine Vampira so hagged out you'd flee to the arms of Nancy Kulp...Brigitte Bardot's little sister as an exchange student...Conway Twitty...fire engine...funny gangsters... Are your sides aching with laughter yet?
Terrifyingly awful. The only saving grace is that neither Woody Woodbury nor Paul Anka makes a guest appearance.

Those With Reasonable Expectations Will Be Entertained
This movie gets beaten up on quite a bit by critics, so my expectations were as low as they could be before watching...perhaps that is why I was so surprised to find some nice moments in this film.
There is no question that this could never be considered a war classic, but to dismiss it outright simply by its reputation, or ones pre-conceived notions, is to do oneself a disservice. For being a low budget movie, there was some nice location shooting, quality set design, decent special effects (for the time), and good quality stock footage. There is some poor editing here and there, and a few technical goofs in the film, but, that aside, I must say that I found the direction to be quite good, overall, for a drive-in movie...and the score was nicely done, as well.
With only one or two exceptions, the cast was very competent, with Audie Murphy and Gary Crosby doing a nice job, as well as a few enjoyable performances supporting them. The plot had great potential, but the script was poorly written and we didn't get to spend enough time with the people we are supposed to care about. Dolores Michaels is gorgeous, so we can understand why Audie Murphy and Alejandro Rey would both be attracted to her, but she has no real chemistry with either man, so it is hard to get swept up in the love triangle. The characters are written to be very one-dimensional, so the plot points and drama never get a chance to make an impact.
The feeling I got at the end of watching this film was that all of the elements were there for a good movie, but it just missed. That being said, I give it a 5 out of 10 for the enjoyment of watching Audie Murphy, as well as a few nice acting and directorial moments. Prepare yourself for a 1960s drive-in movie level of quality, and you will find moments to enjoy throughout.

Elvis Is Fresh
Back in Hollywood, after a two-year stint in the US army, Elvis Presley (as Tulsa McLean) is a stationed-in-Germany singing soldier out to bed sexy dancer Juliet Prowse (as Lili). This tailor-made film set the standard for the successful "ELVIS" movie. Presley spent the 1960s swinging and singing through "Top Ten" box office and record charts. "G.I Blues" propelled Elvis back into Quigley Publications "Box Office" ten most profitable movie stars, where he stayed through 1966. The RCA soundtrack went platinum, and was #1 for ten of its amazing 111 weeks on the LP chart. RCA planned no 45 RPM singles (which helped album sales), but "Wooden Heart" and "G.I. Blues" became hits anyway.
Unfortunately, the musical's trend-setting success overshadowed Presley's superior studio recordings from the time (listen to "Elvis Is Back!"). Also note, the re-recording of "Blue Suede Shoes" is a pale imitation of the 1956 original. So, a creative cancer was being forged. But, it's not fair to fault "G.I. Blues" for the sight and sound of Elvis Presley singing "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" in "Double Trouble" (1967). And, although everyone (including Presley) longed for him to be a great dramatic actor, he shows up in "G.I. Blues" as a charming and natural light performer. Herein, Presley introduces many of the playful mannerisms used throughout the remainder of his career, in musicals and on stage.

The Cookson Hills Robin Hood
This movie came out in 1959, the same year I was born in Oklahoma. I liked this movie and felt that John Ericson did a decent job playing Pretty Boy, even though he looked more like a Ricky Nelson with a James Dean type of murky frown. Ericson, five years later, would play "Pan" in one of my favorite Tony Randall movies, "The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao". Also, in 1965, he played opposite to Ann Francis in "Honey West". Pretty Boy Floyd can be compared to a modern Jesse James. Their home folks and friends help protect and hid them for law enforcement. Their Robin Hood deeds bought them country folk loyalty and legendary status in their respective areas. The movie didn't display this well. This movie could have been better. It left out so much, example being his relationship to his family. I remember a story where he pretended to whip his son in order to appease his wife. Not once in this movie do you hear the name Melvin Purvis, the head G-man under Hoover at the time. Did Purvis and Floyd hold phone conversations ? or did I get that from another Hollywood movie ? It was never proved that Pretty Boy was involved in the Kansas City Massacre. This movie's reenactment looked more like a large alley than a Union Station parking lot. It was rather weak, but what do you expect from a 1959 flick. The best thing about this movie is seeing Barry Newman (the lawyer in "Petrocelli" - 1974 T.V. series) and Al Lewis (grandpa in the "Munsters" T.V. sitcom) in their first screen appearances. It also has Peter Falk (Columbo) in one of his early performances. I think Al Lewis's performance was the best overall. He was very convincing in playing the unstable bad guy.

An apparently lost and forgotten film
Very few people seem to have heard of, let alone seen, this bizarre and strange film, but it is ripe for re-discovery as a precursor of the harsher realism that American movies were able to explore once censorship restrictions were lifted. It is open to all sorts of interpretation; is it a critique of capitalism in which the marriage partner becomes "property"? Is there a hidden homosexual motivation between the two buddies who can, apparently, only attain their "manhood" when in the company of each other? It is perhaps wrong to read too much into early movies using today's sensibilities, but subversive this film most certainly is, and reflects much of the thinking expressed in a ground-breaking book of that era entitled "The American Sexual Tragedy". Passion, when repressed, always runs morbid, and this film illustrates that notion with realism and skill.
A socialite is murdered and her playboy lover, (the young and handsome Marcello), is brought in for questioning. During his stay in custody we get to see the real sneaky playboy in action via flashback. Is he guilty or just a sleaze. Cleverly constructed and effectively shot by Woody Allen's favourite camera person, Carlo Di Palma.

Empty, talky fluff, but the women are insanely gorgeous
I watched this unknown movie only because it has two of the most beautiful actresses who ever lived - Elke Sommer and Sylva Koscina - in its cast. I can't say I was completely disappointed - they both appear in skimpy clothing and they both are criminally sexy (the rest of the ladies are nice-looking as well) - but if you want to see them in a film that actually gives them something to do, check out their next pairing, the 1966 spy adventure "Deadlier than the Male". "Femmine di lusso" is meant to be a romantic comedy about the various relationships between the people who are travelling on a private cruise ship somewhere off the coasts of Italy. But there is so little chemistry between the pairs that we don't care who ends up with who; as for the comedy, the movie's only - and I do mean ONLY - joke is that the ship's owner thinks a photographer on board is gay and tries to keep his son away from him. The film is mostly talk, interrupted only for some sightseeing of the beautiful Italian locations. The silliest element: Elke Sommer is in love with the photographer I mentioned above, but he prefers looking at other girls and he considers her a burden (!!!). Having him kidnapped by aliens would have been more believable. (**)

Creepy horror film from Larry Buchanan
We all know Larry Buchanan made uncredited remakes of 50's sci-fi films for AIP-TV which were THE EYE CREATURES (1965), MARS NEEDS WOMEN (1966), CREATURE OF DESTRUCTION (1967), and IT'S ALIVE (1968). But, THE NAKED WITCH was Buchanan's first horror film, that he co-directed with producer Claude Alexander, that was released in theatres.
The film begins with a strange prolouge about the history of witches that padds the short running time. The film then moves on with a college student (Robert Short) who travels to the German town Luckenbach, Texas to write a thesis about the Luckenbach Witch. The villagers do not want to talk about the Luckenbach Witch, but a young girl named Kirska (Jo Maryman) gives the student a book that mentions about the Luckenbach Witch being put to death with a stake in her heart. The book tells the exact location where the witch is buried and the student digs her up. The student pulls the stake out of the decayed corpse, but it causes the witch to come back to life. The witch (played by Libby Hall) murders the decendents of the family that executed her. The student then steps in to stop the killings, until...
Well, I can't spoil it for you. You will have to see it first. THE NAKED WITCH is an entertaining feature with good camerawork, effective acting, and a simple plot. It is not overdone as most people seem to think that is how horror films are made. Though filmed on a budget of $8,000 on 16mm, THE NAKED WITCH looks very lavish and has some creepy moments.
IMDb mentions two video distributors that have THE NAKED WITCH on video: Something Weird Video and Sinister Cinema. If you are leaning towards the Sinister Cinema copy, don't bother because it is a black and white 35mm print that is missing some footage and has horrible sound. Something Weird Video offers the original color version that was restored from Claude Alexander's personal 35mm negative and is uncut.
So get the Something Weird Video copy, sit back and enjoy THE NAKED WITCH.

Shouldn't that be Belgravia?
"She's not a bad little scrubber, is she?" says Terence Morgan – a sort of low-rent Richard Burton – of his sidekick's girlfriend early on in this odd little heist movie from Wolf Rilla. He pretty much sums up the film's attitude towards women in general – they're either a means to an end to be exploited (the little Burmese girl who lets slip that her ambassador daddy has £100,000 stashed in the Embassy safe, and Mai Zetterling as a treacherous wife who sides with Morgan when he goes into a partnership of convenience with her American husband (John Crawford) to carry out the heist), or semi-vapid nobodies (the aforementioned girlfriend, tellingly named Mouse).
Piccadilly Third Stop – I don't know what that title's all about; most of the heist action centres around Belgravia tube station – has all the usual heist ingredients: double-crossing partners, a Mr. Big (Dennis Jones, obviously finding roles harder to come by as he grew older), a safe-cracker (William Hartnell, giving the film's best performance), but they're all so consistently unpleasant that you never for one minute want them to get away with the loot. While you don't expect a moral anchor in these type of movies, you do at least expect one of the characters to be likable enough to root for. The score might be of interest to jazz aficionados (or not – I'm no expert), but it's sometimes intrusively over the top.
